Pushing and pulling at the fabric of life.

Two etchings made following a conversation between a genetics researcher (me, with my previous career hat on!) and astrophysics researcher Dr. Victoria Grinberg.

We talked about how our work changed how we see the world, particularly issues around life, death and grief. We also talked about the technical details of our work, like pulling DNA through a nanopore for genetic sequencing, which inspired the first print. At the other end of the scale of life, I imagined Victoria pushing at the fabric of spacetime with her research, inspiring the second print. One sentiment we shared was the privilege and awe of the moments during scientific research when you are the first and only person ever to know something new about how the world works.

These are soft-ground etchings, made on zinc plates cut on a CNC machine, with aquatint gradients, and chine collé figures.
